This is the view of the winter fair which comes to East Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh every December. My children really enjoyed our frequent visits to gather sketches for this painting! Every time I see the city at night I marvel at the beauty of the skyline and the magical lighting effects which can be achieved these days. The various skaters come together from different visits as they were always on the move! It took me quite a while before I was happy with the tents in the foreground – it was difficult to create the sense of them being lit from the inside. The large hotel on the skyline is The Balmoral.
