This was the first painting I made from my initial sketch of Edinburgh Castle from the West End. Looking directly up from such close proximity gave the castle a very dark, dramatic aspect – despite the fact that it was a beautiful winter day! I love the dark drama of the charcoal (which was also great fun to work with).
